Meet Julie, from troubled child to confident in school

girl-smiling-thumb.png

When we first met her, Julie was falling behind her classmates in school. In fact, not only could she not read or write in English, she could not speak it properly either. We found that this was because Julie was not getting enough support and encouragement from her family at home.

Julie’s mother has been in and out of prison since she was 2. Julie and her younger sister have been under the care of their elderly grandparents after her mother’s imprisonment. Although her grandparents try their best to ensure that their grandchildren were getting the proper education and go to school regularly, Julie was not getting proper guidance and was unmotivated when in school. Julie was failing her studies.

Now, Julie's future is so much brighter!

She was a lot more shy in the beginning, but now she’s starting to read more fluently and is more confident when reading on her own!

10-year-old Julie is now in Primary 4 and not only can she read and write English, she speaks it confidently too! A lot of her progress was made with the help of her Learning Friend, Sze Shan.

Sze Shan has been reading to Julie every week for the past two years. During their sessions, Sze Shan not only does storytelling, but she provides her with the motivation to read more and to slowly become more comfortable with using new vocabulary.

Sze Shan has seen huge changes in Julie since their first lesson. Julie barely understood a word of English then!

With Sze Shan’s constant support and her unwavering patience, not only is Julie now able to read and write on her own, she is no longer insecure and is more independent when in school!

Julie now helps her younger sister with her homework too!

With her new-found confidence and support of Sze Shan, Julie has a much brighter future ahead of her.
